The model is getting into the designing game, and we've got the scoop

Lily Aldridge knows a thing or two about clothes. In addition to coming from a fashion-focused family (her sisters Saffron and Ruby are both models, and her brother Miles is a fashion photographer), the supermodel has graced numerous catwalks and magazine covers herself, and officially became a Victoria's Secret angel in 2010.

So when T-shirt brand Velvet by Graham & Spencer asked Aldridge to create a capsule collection, the pairing couldn't have been more natural. We've got the scoop on the spring looks (now available for pre-order) and how she liked designing for a change.

You've had a relationship with Velvet for quite a while, starring in over a dozen of their campaigns over the years. Whose idea was it to collaborate on a capsule collection?
It just happened naturally! We toyed with the idea for a few years, and then they asked me if I'd like to do it last year. I was so excited because I've always wanted to do some sort of capsule collection, but when I've been approached by other companies, it's never felt right. I'm so happy to work with Velvet because obviously we have such an amazing relationship — they're like family to me.

What's it like going from model to designer?
It's awesome! I love my job and the creative things I get to do, and this is just a new branch of my career that I'm so excited about. I love clothes and fashion, so getting to design this collection was basically designing the wardrobe that I want to wear this summer. It's every girl's dream to create their own clothing line! I'm still a model and a Victoria's Secret angel, but I do love getting to do these little creative ventures.

What was the design process like?
They asked me to create whatever I thought was cool and wanted to wear. They know my style, and naturally I'm a California girl. I have that laid-back look, so I don't think they were scared that I was going to create some crazy collection! This collection is definitely eclectic: beautiful floral dresses, sexier leopard print, girly lace dresses, and, of course, some super comfy, cool tees and tank tops. They really just wanted me to play and have fun, which I did!

You've named each style after one of your loved ones. Did you design the pieces with them in mind?
Kind of. I started designing stuff, and then one piece came out and it totally reminded me of Dixie, my daughter, because it's so beautiful and makes me so happy every time I see it. Then there was a T-shirt that my husband loved, so I named it "the Caleb" because he likes to see me in a cool T-shirt with some jeans and heels. It was so fun to dedicate certain pieces to people, so by the end I named each one after people I know and love. There's a military jacket in the collection that's so my sister Ruby, and I can't wait to get her one.

What kind of girl do you see wearing this collection?
Honestly, I see every kind of girl in these clothes, because the line isn't made for one type of girl. Sometimes I'm super girly, other times I'm a little sexy, and then there are times where I'm as tomboy as you can get. I wanted this to be something that everyone could relate to, no matter what you're into.

This collection was created with soft, sheer fabrics. Was comfort a big factor in your design process?
Definitely. I'm never going to put something on that I don't feel comfortable in, because that will show. It's important to have a balance, and everything in this collection looks chic and beautiful, but is very easy to wear.

Could this be the beginning of a design career for you?
I hope so! I had so much fun doing this, and I hope I'll get to do it again with Velvet. I loved creating something that I'm so proud of, and I'm already thinking about what I want to wear this fall. It's definitely something that I want to pursue.

Whose style do you admire?
Obviously I love Kate Moss. I think she's the perfect mix of rock 'n' roll and sexy-cool. My little sister Ruby has amazing style, and so do all of my girlfriends. I've actually started thinking about which pieces I want to send to each of them once the collection comes out. It's so fun to have this line and know exactly which pieces are perfect for each of my friends.

Are there any other special projects you'd want to work on?
There are so many things. I love fashion and clothing, but I also love skincare and fragrance, so maybe one day I can get into something beauty-wise. But I just love creating and being a part of the design process...so who knows!
